History of Murray Theater

The Murray Theater, a striking Art Moderne landmark located at 4961 South State Street in Murray, Utah, has been a cultural anchor for the community since it first opened its doors on October 28, 1938. Built by local businessmen Tony Duvall and Joseph L. Lawrence, the theater was designed with cutting-edge features for its time—including microphonic sound, fluorescent lighting, and air conditioning—which made it one of the most modern entertainment venues in the state.

Opening night featured a double screening of Alexander’s Ragtime Band and Disney’s Hawaiian Holiday, and soon after, the Murray Theater showcased two of Hollywood’s first color blockbusters: Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz. For decades, the theater remained a beloved destination for moviegoers, contributing to the identity of downtown Murray.

However, like many historic theaters, the Murray Theater faced challenges in the latter half of the 20th century. It struggled to compete with emerging multiplexes and underwent several transformations—including periods where it served as a church, a wrestling venue, and even stood vacant for some time. Despite these fluctuations, its cultural and architectural significance endured.

Recognizing the building’s potential and historical value, Murray City purchased the theater in 2017 with a visionary plan: to restore and reimagine the space as a multi-functional performance venue. The renovation project equipped the theater to host live concerts, theater productions, film screenings, public meetings, and school events, reestablishing it as a vital civic and cultural hub. The Murray Theater’s first performance, scheduled September 25, 2025, will feature vocalist Loren Allred who was a Murray resident.

The Murray Theater holds the distinction of being one of Utah’s few remaining examples of Art Moderne architecture and is proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its distinctive curved façade, horizontal lines, and glass-block accents speak to a bygone era of elegance and innovation.

Today, the theater’s revival is being shaped not only by city leadership but also by the passionate efforts of local residents, the Murray Cultural Arts Board, and generous community partners. Their shared commitment ensures that this historic gem will continue to inspire and entertain for generations to come
